Bello is correct, the objective is to ensure efficient mixing.

Below are comments from Matthew Clark during a recent SEC Asia Intermediate Feed Milling Course:

Consistency in feed mixing is essential for ensuring every batch meets nutritional standards and legal requirements. The goal is to evenly distribute all components, resulting in a nutritionally balanced product. Mixing uniformity is typically measured by the coefficient of variation (CV%) of a specific nutrient or ingredient—often chlorine from salt.

Key insights for better mixing results batch after batch:

    • Generally mixing uniformity increases with mixing time (<5% CV is ideal)
    • The order in which ingredients are added matters – add dry ingredients first before incorporating liquids. Adding liquid ingredients too early can cause lumping, leading to uneven distribution of nutrients such as fats and amino acids.
    • Add liquids through multiple application points for optimal dispersion.
    • Spray nozzles should be positioned and angled to direct liquids into the active mixing zone – typically the “throw” or fold of the paddles—where particles are suspended and mixed thoroughly.

Mixer CV Results And Possible Corrective Action

    • <5% Excellent None
    • 5-10% Good Increase mixing time by 25-30%.
    • 10-15% Poor Increase mixing time by 50%, look for worn equipment, overfilling, or sequence of ingredient addition and cleanliness of scroll or paddles, type of ingredient.
    • >15% Very poor Possible combination of all above. Consult extension personnel or feed equipment manufacturer.

The number of paddles in a metric ton mixer can vary depending on the specific design and manufacturer. However, some common configurations include 6-paddle, 8-paddle, or twin-shaft designs. The design aims to ensure efficient mixing of materials within the mixer’s capacity.
