Moisture content plays a crucial role in the batching and mixing process in a feed mill. Here’s how it affects operations:
1. Accuracy in Batching
Ingredients with high moisture content weigh more, which can lead to inaccurate batching if not properly accounted for.
Variations in moisture levels can cause inconsistencies in the final feed formulation.
2. Mixing Efficiency
High moisture content can cause ingredients to clump together, reducing uniform mixing.
Uneven distribution of moisture can lead to feed segregation and inconsistent nutrient distribution.
3. Feed Quality and Storage Stability
Excess moisture increases the risk of mold growth, spoilage, and mycotoxin development, which can harm animal health.
Too much moisture can affect pellet durability and lead to crumbling during handling and storage.
4. Processing and Pelletizing
Moisture influences the steam conditioning process; the right moisture level improves pellet binding and durability.
If ingredients are too dry, they may not bind well, leading to weak pellets. If too wet, they can cause clogging in the pellet mill.
