Water plays an important role in productivity. Water’s help dissolve organic and inorganic substances and to aid in the processes of feed metabolism, absorption of nutrient elements, and transportation process. Therefore, poor quality water can lower productivity.

If birds don’t have access to enough water, they may eat less feed and experience health issues.

  • Drinking water with high levels of sodium or calcium can dehydrate stools, increase litter humidity, and decrease blood potassium concentrations.

Clean and high-quality water ensures optimal feed utilization, better nutrient absorption, and robust growth in poultry, while poor water quality can lead to health issues, reduced productivity, and economic losses

Water quality can be divided into three main categories 1) microbiology, 2) chemicals, and 3) minerals. Microbial contamination (i.e., bacteria, viruses, parasites) of water can cause disease in animals, which likely will depress feed intake and reduced growth performance. Chemical contamination, depending on the chemical, can have a variety of alterations in the physiology of animals with detrimental effects to production. Mineral contamination can cause the birds to refuse to drink the water (e.g., high levels of sulfates, iron, nitrates, etc.). If water intake is reduced, then feed intake will also be reduces causing a reduction in growth performance. Finally, the high presence of certain dissolved minerals in the water (e.g., calcium, magnesium, sodium, and others) can cause nutritional imbalances if the water intake of minerals is not taken into account in the feed formulation.
