The nutrient composition of poultry feed and the efficiency with which birds utilize those nutrients can be influenced by several factors. These include:

    1. Feed Quality and Composition

Ingredient Selection: The type and quality of ingredients in poultry feed (e.g., grains, protein sources, vitamins, and minerals) determine its nutritional value.

Processing Methods: Grinding, pelleting, and extrusion can impact nutrient availability. Poor processing may lead to nutrient loss.

Storage Conditions: Exposure to heat, moisture, and pests can degrade feed quality, leading to loss of essential nutrients like vitamins and amino acids.

    2. Digestibility and Bioavailability

Enzyme Activity: Some feed ingredients contain anti-nutritional factors (e.g., phytates in grains) that reduce nutrient absorption. Adding enzymes like phytase can improve nutrient availability.

Fiber Content: High fiber content can reduce nutrient absorption and energy availability.

    3. Bird-Specific Factors

Age and Growth Stage: Nutritional requirements change as birds grow. Chicks need more protein, while layers need higher calcium for eggshell formation.

Genetics: Different breeds have varying abilities to utilize nutrients efficiently.

Health Status: Diseases, parasites, and gut health issues (e.g., coccidiosis) can affect nutrient absorption.

    4. Environmental Conditions

Temperature and Humidity: Heat stress can reduce feed intake and nutrient utilization, while cold stress increases energy requirements.

Housing and Management: Poor ventilation and overcrowding can stress birds, affecting their metabolism and nutrient needs.

    5. Water Quality and Availability

Contaminated or insufficient water supply can negatively affect digestion and nutrient absorption. Essential minerals in water can also impact overall nutrient balance.

The nutrient needs of poultry are determined by two main factors: 1) maintenance and 2) productive traits like growth and egg production. External factors like disease, heat, environment, and other will affect either the maintenance or productive needs or both, which will alter the needs of birds. In practical terms, nutrient needs are usually determined by genetic potential of the birds, physiological state (e.g., growth, laying eggs, etc.), and health status. Diet formulation, feed intake, feed quality, and environmental factors do not alter the nutrient needs of birds. Remember, nutrient needs are expressed in a grams or milligrams per day or another similar units. Environmental factors, antinutritional factors, and improperly balanced diets will affect the efficiency of digestion and feed utilization but not the amount of nutrients needed by a bird in one day. Changes in feed intake will affect the concentration of nutrient in the feed but will not alter the amount of nutrients needed by a bird in one day.

    The Factors are:

Feed quality: Poor quality or contaminated feed can reduce feed intake.

Feed additives: Non-nutritive substances that can improve growth and nutrient metabolism.

Nutrient balance: The concentration of nutrients in the diet.

High temperatures: Can reduce nutrient utilization, growth rate, and egg production.

Many factors can affect the nutrients in poultry, including the feed, the birds, and the environment.
