To evaluate the nutritional adequacy of a formulated feed, researchers typically employ a tiered approach, starting with chemical analysis (proximate analysis and Van Soest fiber fractions) to quantify nutrients, such as crude protein, lipids, and minerals, against established standards (e.g., NRC or FAO). This is followed by digestibility and balance trials, which measure the difference between nutrient intake and fecal/urinary excretion to determine the bioavailable fraction. Finally, growth or production performance trials provide the ultimate validation by tracking metrics such as Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Specific Growth Rate (SGR), and health biomarkers in the target species over a specific period.

The nutritional adequacy of a formulated feed can be evaluated using several methods, ranging from laboratory analyses to animal performance trials. These methods can be broadly categorized into physical assessment, chemical analysis, in vitro methods, and in vivo trials.
