The most vital factors affecting food consumption and feed utilization include:
- Biological Factors – Species, genetics, age, and health status.
- Environmental Factors – Temperature, housing, lighting, and stress.
- Nutritional Factors – Feed quality, palatability, anti-nutritional elements.
- Managerial Factors – Feeding practices, feed form (pellets vs. mash), and diet balance.

The issues of income-nutrition linkages, value chain selection, food safety, gender and household nutrition practices, post-harvest handling, complementary interventions and nutritionally sensitive groups are important to consider when working to improve utilization:

Psychological factors are among the strongest determinants of what foods an individual eats.

The most obvious factor impacting feed intake is age. Imbalances, deficiencies, and excesses of nutrients can affect feed intake. In general, birds have low palatability, so feed taste is usually not a factor. However, the use of rancid fats and oils can cause feed intake issues. The presence of antinutritional factors, like tannins, gossypol, lectins and others can reduce feed intake. Environmental factors and water quality are normally the first suspects when reduce feed intake is observed in flocks. Inadequate temperature, either too hot or too cold, can affect the ambulatory behavior of birds and hence feed intake. Poor ventilation and therefore the accumulation of noxious gases like ammonia can reduce feed intake in birds. The most obvious culprit for reduced feed intake is the presence of pathogens; however, this may be the hardest one to diagnose particularly when we are talking about subclinical infections. Activation of the immune system due to disease normally results in some level of lethargy and anorexia in vertebrate animals. Finally, the most ignored factor for reduced feed intake is perhaps water quality and quantity. If the drinking water is not appropriate for birds and water intake is reduce then feed intake will also be reduced. Remember water quality include chemical, microbiological, and physical contaminants as well as the temperature of the drinking water.

The most important factors affecting food consumption and feed utilization include:
1. Physiological Factors:
Age and Growth Stage: Younger animals or humans have higher energy and nutrient demands for growth.
Metabolic Rate: Individuals with higher metabolic rates require more food.
Health Status: Illness, stress, or infections can decrease appetite and nutrient absorption.
Reproductive Status: Pregnancy, lactation, and egg production significantly increase nutritional requirements.
2. Diet Composition:
Nutritional Balance: A diet lacking essential nutrients may reduce consumption or lead to malnutrition.
Palatability: Flavor, texture, and aroma of food or feed affect consumption.
Digestibility: Easily digestible food enhances nutrient absorption and utilization.
Anti-Nutritional Factors: Compounds like tannins or phytic acid can reduce feed efficiency.
3. Environmental Factors:
Temperature: Extreme heat or cold can alter metabolic rates and energy requirements.
Availability and Accessibility: Food scarcity or difficult access can limit consumption.
Social Factors: Competition, group feeding dynamics, or cultural practices can influence intake.
