Broiler and layer need the same nutrients. The daily amount of nutrients needed are different between broilers and layers. This is also true for young and older broilers as well as young and older layers. It is important to remember that birds require nutrients on a grams or milligrams per day basis and not percentages. Thus, some adjustments may be needed in the feed formulation to ensure birds are consuming the appropriate amount of nutrients every day if the feed intake is not the same as the indicated on the breeder guide.
As animals age, the amount of nutrients needed on a daily basis increase. However, because feed intake also increases at a faster rate than nutrient needs, when we express the nutrient composition of a diet in percent, we see that density of a nutrient (i.e., percent of a nutrient) in a diet decreases with age.

1. Purpose and Growth Rate
Broilers: Raised for meat production, broilers require rapid growth and muscle development within a short time frame.
Layers: Raised for egg production, layers need nutrients to maintain health and consistent egg-laying performance over a longer lifespan.
2. Protein Requirements
Broilers: Require higher protein levels (20-24% in starter feed) to support rapid growth and muscle development.
Layers: Require moderate protein levels (16-18%) to sustain body maintenance and egg production.
3. Energy Levels
Broilers: Need higher energy diets with more fats and carbohydrates to support their fast growth rate.
Layers: Need lower energy diets to avoid excessive fat deposition, which can reduce egg production efficiency.
4. Calcium and Phosphorus
Broilers: Require calcium and phosphorus for skeletal development, but in moderate amounts.
Layers: Require significantly higher calcium levels (around 3.5-4.5%) for eggshell production. Phosphorus is also essential but in balanced proportions.
5. Vitamins and Minerals
Broilers: Need vitamins and minerals to support overall growth and immunity.
Layers: Require specific vitamins like Vitamin D3 for calcium metabolism and Vitamin E to maintain reproductive health.

Broilers do not require much space and lighting. Layers need enough space and lighting.
