Avian influenza is caused by influenza A viruses, which are spread through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces. Wild birds, such as ducks, gulls, and shorebirds, can carry and spread the virus without showing signs of illness.

Infected birds can shed avian influenza A viruses in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with the virus as it is shed by infected birds.
