To determine if eggs are pasteurized, look for a “P” in a circle stamped on the shell, or check the carton label which should clearly state if the eggs are pasteurized.

the eggs are coated with food-grade wax to maintain freshness and prevent environmental contamination and stamped with a blue or red “P” in a circle to distinguish them from unpasteurized eggs.

To know if eggs are pasteurized, check for the following:
1. Labeling – Pasteurized eggs are usually labeled as “pasteurized” on the carton.
2. Shell Appearance – Pasteurized eggs often have a slightly cloudy or opaque egg white due to the heating process.
3. USDA Stamp – In the U.S., pasteurized eggs may have a red or gold USDA shield or stamp indicating they have been treated.
4. Ask the Supplier – If buying from a farm or market, ask whether the eggs have been pasteurized.
5. Egg Products – Liquid eggs (e.g., cartons of egg whites or whole eggs) are typically pasteurized, and this will be stated on the packaging.
