Broiler chickens digest feed relatively quickly, with most of the nutrients being absorbed within a few hours, but the exact speed depends on factors like the feed composition, bird age, and overall health; generally, they can convert feed into energy efficiently due to their rapid digestive system, resulting in a high feed conversion rate compared to other poultry breeds.

The transit time in broiler varies with many factors including age, diet type, ingredients, particle size, antinutritional factors, added fat, and many more. Normally, the transit time in broilers ranges from 3 to 6 hours. Fibrous ingredients and addition of fat can increase transit time, that is, the feed spends more time in the gastrointestinal tract. Some antinutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors can reduce transit time, that is the feed spends less time in the gastrointestinal tract, and can produce a condition known as “rapid transit” where indigested feed particles are readily found in excreta.

The poultry feed digestibility of crude protein varies from 52 to 92%.
