Feed contamination is any unwanted substance that would be found in the feed.
-
Its not as simple as it looks.
lot of factors actually could affect it, like poor animal source, feed transportation, farm-level contamination, ingredient adulteration, and many relevant things could be reasons. -
It is the introduction of foreign substance to poultry feeds, i.e toxins that can be detrimental to the health of the birds. This could be due to handling or failed biosecurity during transport, storage or serving
-
Poultry feed contamination involves the introduction of detrimental fungi and toxins into poultry feed.
-
Bacteria, fungal mold, pesticides residue, heavy metal
-
This simply refers to the presence of toxins in the feed and it’s capable of causing harm to the birds
-
Poultry feed contamination refers to the presence of harmful substances in feed meant for birds like chickens, ducks, and geese, which can negatively impact their health and productivity. These substances can be biological (like bacteria, fungi, or viruses), chemical (like toxins or pesticides), or physical (like foreign objects)
-
They are undesirable, lethal and poisonous, biological and chemical substances found or present either in feed raw materials or finished feeds
For example, feeds ingredients with high moisture content (not properly dried) be cereals or protein ingredients will be sources of Aflatoxins in the finished feeds and thus prone birds to aflatoxicosis when fed .
Poor hygiene in the feedmill house such as improper cleaning of feedmill machines,Rat infestation etc.can be sources of feed contamination.

I will answer from the codex code perspective, so that we can have a very clear understanding. Codex defines feed contaminant as …Any biological, chemical or physical agent not intentionally added to feed which may compromise the safety or suitability of feed for animals….
This is tricky because it therefore means that if you find groundnut cake in finished feed, it is a contaminant. The fact that it is a feed ingredient does not make it right as long as itb was not added intentionally, it is a contaminant.
