In a shed with birds, it’s generally advisable to avoid using strong chemicals that could harm the birds or the environment. Instead, consider using natural bird repellents or non-toxic methods to discourage them from entering or nesting. Natural repellents like methyl anthranilate, which has a mild grape smell, or strong smells like peppermint or peppers, can be effective at deterring birds. Another option is using visual deterrents like reflective tape or predator decoys. If you need to use a gel, look for one that is non-acidic and non-toxic.

Why not seal up the entire shed?

You can use bird repellent sprays containing natural substances like methyl anthranilate, which is a bitter and pungent substance extracted from concord grapes, or consider physical deterrents like spikes or netting.

When using chemicals in a poultry shed with birds present, safety is the top priority. The chemicals must be non-toxic, non-irritating, and approved for use around birds. Here are some options:

    1. Disinfectants Safe for Birds

Potassium Peroxymonosulfate (e.g., Virkon S) – A broad-spectrum disinfectant that is safe when properly diluted.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (e.g., QAC-based disinfectants) – Effective against bacteria and viruses but must be used at recommended concentrations.

Hydrogen Peroxide & Peracetic Acid (e.g., Oxidizing disinfectants) – Safe when used in misting systems at correct dilutions.

    2. Insecticides & Pest Control

Diatomaceous Earth (Food Grade) – Natural and safe for controlling mites and insects.

Pyrethrin-based sprays – Can be used for fly and mosquito control but should be applied in well-ventilated areas.

Biological Larvicides (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis, Methoprene) – Safe for controlling fly larvae in manure.

    3. Ammonia & Odor Control

Zeolites – Natural absorbents that reduce ammonia levels.

Yucca Extracts – Used as a feed additive or shed spray to reduce ammonia.

    4. Fogging & Fumigation (with Birds Present)

To deter birds from a shed, consider using bird repellent sprays containing methyl anthranilate (MA) or applying sticky gels to perches, or using visual and auditory deterrents like reflective tape, wind chimes, or ultrasonic devices.
