The poultry digestive system’s structure, including the gizzard, small intestine, and ceca, significantly impacts nutrient absorption efficiency, with the gizzard aiding in mechanical breakdown, the small intestine being the primary absorption site, and the ceca contributing to fermentation and absorption.

The gizzard, a muscular organ, acts like a grinding mill, breaking down feed into smaller particles, which increases the surface area for digestive enzymes to act upon. This mechanical processing enhances nutrient digestibility and absorption.

The small intestine is the primary site for nutrient absorption, featuring villi (finger-like projections) that dramatically increase the surface area for absorption. The lining of the small intestine is highly specialized for maximizing digestion and absorption of nutrients.

The ceca, located at the junction of the small and large intestines, are involved in the fermentation of undigested food and the absorption of volatile fatty acids, which can be used as an energy source.
