Signs of stress or disease in a flock manifest through both physical and behavioral changes that require immediate attention. Huddling often indicates that birds are chilled, in pain, or suffering from a systemic infection, while gasping or open-mouth breathing typically points to respiratory distress, heat stress, or gapeworm. Lethargy, characterized by droopy wings and a lack of interest in food or movement, is a common sign of severe illness, such as coccidiosis or viral infections. Additionally, feather picking and cannibalism are usually behavioral responses to environmental stressors such as overcrowding, poor nutrition, or inadequate ventilation, though they can also be triggered by external parasites.
