Many hens lay their first egg around 18 weeks and then up to an egg a day, depending on breed, environment, and individual bird.

Hens usually start laying eggs at about 18–24 weeks of age (around 4½–6 months), depending on the breed, nutrition, lighting, and management. Commercial layers: ~18–20 week and Dual-purpose or local breeds: ~20–24 weeks Good feed, proper lighting, and low stress can help hens start laying on time.

Hens generally start laying eggs between 18 and 22 weeks old (around 4-5 months), but this varies significantly by breed, with some starting as early as 16 weeks (Golden Comets) and others taking up to 24-30 weeks (Araucanas, Ameraucanas). Key signs they’re getting ready include a brighter red comb/wattles, increased vocalizations, squatting behavior, and exploring nesting boxes.

Hens typically start laying eggs at around 5 to 6 months of age, although this can vary depending on the breed and environmental conditions. Factors such as light exposure, nutrition, and overall health also influence the onset of egg production.
