Ensuring proper sanitation in poultry facilities is critical for bird health, productivity, and biosecurity. Here are the key steps to follow:
—
1. Pre-Cleaning Preparation
Remove birds: All birds must be removed before cleaning.
Take out equipment: Feeders, drinkers, nests, and movable equipment should be taken outside for separate cleaning.
Dry clean: Sweep or blow out dust, feathers, litter, and manure before washing.
—
2. Washing and Cleaning
Soak surfaces: Use low-pressure water to wet floors, walls, ceilings, and equipment. Allow to soak (30–60 mins).
High-pressure wash: Thoroughly clean with detergent and high-pressure water. Focus on cracks, corners, and crevices.
Clean equipment: Wash and disinfect feeders, drinkers, and tools separately.
—
3. Disinfection
Choose effective disinfectants: Use broad-spectrum agents (e.g., quaternary ammonium compounds, glutaraldehyde, chlorine-based).
Apply thoroughly: Spray or fog the entire facility including walls, floors, ceilings, and equipment.
Follow contact time: Ensure disinfectant remains wet for the recommended duration.
—
4. Drying
Allow the building and all equipment to dry completely.
Keep doors and windows open if possible to increase ventilation and drying speed.
—
5. Downtime (Rest Period)
Rest the house: Leave the facility empty for 10–14 days to break pathogen life cycles.
Maintain rodent and pest control during this period.
—
6. Biosecurity Measures
Footbaths and hand hygiene: At entrances, use disinfectant footbaths and provide hand-washing stations.
Limit access: Restrict entry to essential personnel only.
Protective clothing: Use clean overalls, boots, and gloves.
—
7. Water and Feed Line Sanitation
Flush and disinfect water lines regularly (especially between flocks).
