A feed recall procedure is essential to protect livestock, consumers, and your business in case of contamination or adulteration. Here’s a structured recall procedure you can follow for your feed mill:

    1. Establish a Recall Team

Assign a recall coordinator and team members responsible for investigation, communication, and logistics.

Ensure roles are clearly defined for quick decision-making.

    2. Identify the Problem

Determine the nature of the contamination (biological, chemical, or physical).

Trace the affected batch using production records and quality control logs.

Assess the risks to animal health, human safety, and the environment.

    3. Notify Relevant Authorities

Inform regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC, SON (in Nigeria) or FDA, USDA (in the U.S.), depending on your location.

If necessary, inform other stakeholders like farmers, distributors, and veterinarians.

    4. Stop Distribution and Isolate Affected Products

Halt the sale and distribution of the contaminated feed immediately.

Quarantine the affected batches in storage to prevent further spread.

    5. Communicate with Customers and the Public

Notify customers (distributors, farmers, retailers) about the issue.

Provide instructions on how to return or properly dispose of the contaminated feed.

Use multiple communication channels like phone, email, and official announcements.

    6. Recall and Remove Affected Feed

Retrieve the contaminated feed from customers, warehouses, and retailers.

Keep detailed records of recalled products, including quantity and location.

    7. Investigate the Root Cause

Conduct a root cause analysis to determine how contamination or adulteration occurred.

Check raw materials, processing, storage, and transportation for potential issues.

    8. Implement Corrective Actions

Improve quality control measures to prevent recurrence.

Train employees on feed safety protocols.

Upgrade equipment or modify production processes if needed.

    9. Document the Recall Process

Maintain detailed records of all recall activities.

Submit reports to regulatory authorities if required.
