When selecting raw materials for feed formulation, the primary factors to consider include the nutrient profile (protein, amino acids, energy, and minerals) and the bioavailability of these nutrients to the target species. One must also evaluate the presence of anti-nutritional factors, such as trypsin inhibitors in raw soybeans, which can be mitigated through proper heat processing to ensure high digestibility. Beyond nutrition, physical characteristics like grind size and flowability are crucial for manufacturing stability, while economic factors (least-cost availability) and safety parameters (absence of mycotoxins, heavy metals, or pesticide residues) ensure the feed is both profitable and compliant with international standards like those of the American Soybean Association (ASA).

Raw materials should be nutritionally adequate, safe, cost-effective, available, and suitable for the target animal and processing system.

- It is inevitable that the quality of ingredients will vary, even from the same supplier from batch to batch and/or from month to month, and so it is important that this variability be characterised and monitored.
- To ensure the ingredients are meeting specifications, the nutritionist/quality control staff should conduct periodic sampling to verify the ingredient specifications are being met.
- All suppliers should furnish some type of official document which will permit the person in the mill responsible for receiving the product(s) to correctly and positively identify the inbound product and determine that the product actually belongs to the feed mill.
- All incoming ingredients should be inspected and tags/labels should be read for medications, trace minerals and other additives.

Quality feed begins with quality ingredients and it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to make sure that the ingredients used .

Selecting raw materials for feed formulation requires balancing nutritional needs, quality and safety standards, and economic and practical factors. The goal is to create a cost-effective, balanced, and palatable diet that supports animal health and production goals.
