Feed processing involves several steps to convert raw ingredients into a balanced and digestible feed for animals. Here’s a general outline of the process:
1. Ingredient Selection & Sourcing
Choose high-quality raw materials (grains, protein sources, vitamins, minerals, etc.).
Ensure ingredients meet nutritional requirements.
2. Grinding
Reduce particle size using hammer mills or roller mills.
Improves digestibility and mixing efficiency.
3. Batching & Weighing
Weigh each ingredient based on the feed formulation.
Ensures consistency and accuracy in nutrient composition.
4. Mixing
Blend ingredients thoroughly to create a uniform feed mixture.
Horizontal or vertical mixers are commonly used.
5. Conditioning (for pelleted feed)
Add steam and heat to soften the feed mix.
Improves binding and enhances digestibility.
6. Pelleting or Extrusion (if needed)
Compress the feed into pellets using a pellet mill.
Extruders may be used for floating fish feed or high-energy diets.
7. Cooling & Drying
Reduce moisture and heat from pellets to prevent mold growth.
Cooled using counterflow coolers.
8. Crumbling (if needed)
Break large pellets into smaller sizes for young animals.
9. Screening & Packaging
Remove dust and fines from pellets.
Package feed in bags or bulk storage.
10. Storage & Distribution
Store in a dry, well-ventilated place to maintain feed quality.
