Just to clarify, one part per million (PPM) usually refers to ratio of one to one million. PPM in the metric system is usually associated with milligrams (mg) per kilogram as there are one million milligrams in one kilogram. However, ppm is not a unit of measurement and can lead to some confusion particularly when the metric system is not use or the traditional ratio of milligrams to grams is used. The same is true for parts per billion (PPB); it usually refers to the amount of micrograms in one kilogram as there are one billion micrograms in one kilogram but is not consider as a unit of measurement but rather a ratio or proportion of units.
