The specific functions of each vitamin and mineral are too vast and complex to address here. Nonetheless, most vitamins and mineral are use in metabolic processes as co-factors of enzymatic reactions and are critically needed for the proper function of metabolism. Because the bioavailability of trace minerals (i.e., copper, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc) is so variable in feedstuffs, there are specific recommendations for their supplementation in poultry diets. Potassium and magnesium are usually present in sufficient quantities from feedstuffs and not supplemented. Calcium, phosphorus, sodium and chloride, which are normally supplemented in poultry diets, are known as macrominerals because animals needed is considerably higher quantities than trace minerals. Vitamins and trace minerals are normally added as a combined or separate premix to diets. Excess and deficiencies of minerals and vitamins will affect normal metabolic processes as well as immune functions. Therefore, it is important to supplement vitamins and minerals at the appropriate levels to maintain a healthy metabolism and hence a healthy bird.

The vitamins are of two types, one is fatsoluble (vitamin A,D,E and K) and other is water soluble (vitamin B complex group)
vitamin A : this vitamin is very important and is needed for growth, health of eyes and moist surfaces of the body. The deficiency of this fat soluble vitamin causes poor growth, weakness and decrease egg production
Vitamin D : This fat soluble vitamin is essential for the utilization of calcium.

Minerals can be classified as macro-minerals(calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and magnesium)
micro-minerals (copper, zinc, iron, iodine and manganese)
traceminerals (cobalt and selenium) with each having different function on poultry.

adequate supply of minerals and vitamins in diets is key for good poultry production.
poutry meat is easily digestible has higher nutritive value, less fat.
The feeding of vitamins and minerals deficient diet can produce numerous health problems for chicks including death in some cases.

Vitamins exert catalytic functions that facilitate nutrient synthesis, thus controlling metabolism and affecting the performance and health of poultry.
