WHAT CAUSES FLUID ACCUMULATION IN THE ABDOMEN OF POULTRY?

The following should be considered as general information only; however, you should always seek professional advice, specific to your individual circumstances.

Water accumulation in the abdomen of chickens is most commonly caused by a condition known as ascites or “water belly.” Ascites refers to the buildup of fluid—primarily lymph and blood plasma—in the abdominal cavity. This condition is typically the result of pulmonary hypertension syndrome, where the bird’s heart and lungs cannot keep up with the oxygen demands of the body. This leads to increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, heart failure, and fluid leakage from the liver into the abdomen.
