The first 10 days after hatch are the most critical for broilers. During this period, the birds are poikilotherms (“cold blooded”) and towards the end will transition to endotherms (“warm blooded”). During this period the yolk sac should also be absorbed and hence the birds will transition from endogenous nutrition to exogenous nutrition, which depends on feed intake. Birds also have an immature digestive system exhibiting a lower ability to digest ingredients and therefore it is imperative to use ingredients of high quality and highly digestible. The immune system relies at the beginning of this period in maternal antibodies and transition to sensing, processing and presentation of antigens to initiate humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. In summary, there are a lot of physiological transitions in the first 10 days of a broiler life that makes them the most critical challenging phase of production.

In addition to all that has been said, you don’t want to miss out of their incredible FCR in the first few days. You may never recover what is lost
